What is a Blood Volume Monitor?
Measurement of relative blood volume change
A blood volume monitor is a device that can be used to estimate a relative (percentage) blood volume changes over time. However, it provides no knowledge about the absolute blood volume or absolute change in blood volume over time.
Why use a blood volume monitor?
Blood volume monitor devices are frequently used in hospital dialysis units to track the progression of the dialysis procedure.
The volume of blood to be removed during the dialysis procedure is often based on an estimated patient dry weight. This could normally be estimated from the body weight of patient with normal and healthy blood volume or from other types of clinical evaluation. However, estimation of dry-weight using these methods are often associated with uncertainty and only provide a rough estimate.
Improving dialysis results
In order to determine how much blood should be removed during dialysis the quantification of total blood volume prior to performing the dialysis is warranted. This would provide an understanding of intravascular volume status and help guide the dialysis procedure. Performing a blood volume test would meet these requirements.
